MUH 6515: Role Play and Socialization

For the topic of how role play affects socialization, I choose a video of several students playing singing games, including Bingo and Hot Potato. It seems that the group of students have several different accents, with British accents being the most represented and so it is possible they are located in the United Kingdom. I selected this video because it shows just how important musical play can be to social development. In the article, Lew mentions that little ones learn about themselves and others as well as their environments through musical play. It is through this learning about each other that children learn social skills,  such as team work, that will serve them their entire lives. The two student "leaders" in the opening of the video are showing younger students how to preform the song "Bingo." It is interesting to watch the interaction between the leaders as they take turns giving the instructions.

  1. Hi Stephanie,
I also watched this video when I was looking for an example for this week! I thought it was fascinating to watch the children at the beginning of the video who were giving instructions to the younger children. Especially in light of the points that Lew and Campbell bring up in their article about the importance of play in child culture, these leadership roles are evident in this video.

  2. This video was so fun to watch! I love how the older students take initiative to help the younger students. Teamwork plays a huge factor in these activities, and will help students not only in music but in their every day lives. Many of these simple songs also include movement such as the clapping in BINGO. Even a student who is unfamiliar with the language would hopefully be able to join in and recognize the musical patterns. My daughter is only 4 and she is starting to come home singing some of these playground songs, and jump rope chants. I think it's interesting how some are the same from when I was little. It's imperative we encourage social interaction with our children. Experiencing music through play is an excellent way for people from a variety of cultures to come together and communicate in a fun way.

  3. Hey Stefanie,

This was a great choice of a video. The BINGO portion was really interesting to watch in regards to the socialization present. You specifically mention leadership and teamwork. Since socialization is defined as the social interaction between people, another social skill present was patience and tolerance. The "leaders" took the time to ensure all the younger children were aware of the rules and none of the younger children appeared impatient.

In addition, the second game was interesting to watch. It is a great example of tying culture to a game in regards to the story discussed in the song. I also liked that it covered the social aspect of following directions.

Again, this was a great choice and a great post!

  4. Stefanie,

What a great example. Children definitely learn about their environment, and about other people through social games. In this example we can see students children learning how to lead, how to listen, and how to manipulate spelling (specifically by subtracting letters). They are also getting a mental workout while they focus on replacing letters with claps, and still sing correctly. Social play helps children practice and reinforce concepts in a less structured and "boring" environment than a lecture in school, or completing worksheets at home. In fact, I would say that throughout our lives, we learn best when we are actively engaged and having fun!
